Originally, the district "Cap d'Agde" was planned as the seaport of cardinal Richelieu. The cap of Agde which developed of the stream of molten lava of the volcano Mont St-Loup should have been extended up to the Fort Brescou to provide for a large roadstead for trade. After the death of Richelieu this project, however, was given up. During the 70s, this harbour project was newly taken up again for tourism. At the drawing board, the largest European tourism place developed with a large marina offering some 1,900 berths. Houses have been architecturally adapted to the typical style with three or four floors in different pastel colours with typical clay bricks. Narrow streets and shady places give Cap d'Agde the typical Mediterranean atmosphere.

The beaches of a total length of 14 km are wide and very inviting for long walks. The continuous slight sea current provides for an excellent water quality. On the one hand, there are fine sandy beaches of many kilometres length, but also basalt cliffs of the cap of Agde with the island Fort Brescou off the coast. The ruins of this island once served as a prison, later as an old peoples home and a mental asylum. Nowadays, the island can be visited.
