During the 19th century, the old part of town was restored by the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. In 1997, Carcassonne with its double city wall which is still in good condition was declared to the Unesco global cultural heritage. Originally, the Canal du Midi run past Carcassonne. However, the economic advantages of the canal have been early recognized and for this reason the citizens led the Canal du Midi through Carcassonne.
